Today was a memorable and cathartic session with my coach. We’ve been working towards self-improvement for almost a year now and never did I imagine that I’d be lifting such amounts after all the health conditions I’ve dealt with, and some, still dealing with. Due to this, I was not given the medical go-ahead to compete this year but hoping to make it in the coming year.
Today my coach changed a bit his approach to show me that I can successfully make it to a competition next year but instead, somehow, my mind interpreted the change of approach in a way that what I’m doing is not enough and that I need to put my mind more into it if I want to make it. Miscommunication is the simplest, yet most common, way leading to conflicts. I understood that it was a miscommunication because I decided to talk about how I was feeling by the approach change. Haven’t I done so it would have lead me to feel that I might not be good to think I can work towards competing in the coming year. Such experiences should really be used for self-reflection as they explain more about me (the interpreter) than about the speaker (my coach). I feel privileged to have such a dedicated coach where his main intention is to patiently and gradually help me develop into becoming a better person and athlete each and every day (basically using my craft, sport psychology, on me! ) .
Today was a good day to remind me the importance of:
1. Choosing the right coach
2. Having an open and honest coach-athlete relationship
3. Understanding each individual’s perspective, intentions and interpretations
4. Self-Reflection
